February 2021 Updates

February 2021 Update

Hey everyone!

It's been almost a year since we last met to play floorball, and over 6 months since we had any update for the group. However, I've had a few people ask about where we stand, so it seems like a good time to let you all know what's going on with the Austin Floorball Club and more.

League
We currently have worked it out to return to league play at Rock Sports Arena on Sunday, 6/6/2021. As of right now, I see no reason why this will not be feasible, but we all know that everything is subject to change. Keep an eye out as I would expect us to start working out the league logistics and registrations starting in April.

Drop-in

Currently, all City of Austin Recreation Centers are closed. It is possible that they may start opening up slowly with limited activity, but I don't imagine our group will be in the initial rounds of openings as those likely refer to their childcare are youth operations. Once rec centers open back up, we will continue our normal drop-ins at Virginia L. Brown Recreation centers. We're also looking at finding another evening, too!

Tournaments

The NTFA is hosting its annual Texas Open Tournament on March 13-14 in Arlington, Texas. This is a tournament we would normally organize a team for because it's 3 hours away and the NTFA people are our friends and they're pretty cool too. However, and by unanimous board decision, we've decided this is not an option we will pursue. We've agreed that our efforts over the next few months will be better spent making sure our club is prepared to return to Sunday league and our normal operations. If you are interested as an individual, you can still play as a free agent. Details can be found at http://www.ntfa.us/leagues/eventsV2.cfm?clientid=5069&leagueid=0

North American Floorball League (NAFL)

In other happenings in the floorball world, a grassroots campaign to bring professional, high-level floorball to the US is underway. It's making great progress, and you can find out more information from their website: https://nafloorball.com/

In relation to our club/town, Austin will have a local team, the Texas Tornadoes. I think it's important we support our local teams, so be sure to follow them on all their social media platforms and reach out to them if you are interested in playing or want to get involved. There will be lots of chances to volunteer with the Tornadoes coming up in the next few months (talk to Mark Raup).

Currently, we have 3 of Austin Floorball Club's lankiest members committed and signed to the team, so be sure to congratulate them:
Case Connor
Marcus Davidson
Jonas Davidson

There are also 3 other teams playing in the inaugural season, so go check them out: Fort Worth Jaguars, Fresno Force, Cleveland Bucs

That's really all I can think of for now. I really miss playing floorball and miss seeing everyone every week, and I am sure you all feel the same. Please feel free to reach out with any questions, comments, or concerns.

Floyd
